“A classic fragrance is a unique and timeless work of art, and as trends change and new technologies and raw materials are discovered, it continues to maintain its appeal to a wide range of consumers ,” explained Kate Oldham, senior vice president and general manager of beauty, jewelry and home at Saks Fifth Avenue. With this timeless allure, Oldham highlights how scents are not bound by traditional gender categories (for example, women’s perfume or men’s cologne), but rather the connections and feelings associated with them. Sarah Brown, executive director of Violet Lab in Violet Grey, agrees. “It has to be recognizable and become someone’s signature, and that’s the greatest achievement,” Brown says of what makes a fragrance truly timeless. “When you see it, you know it…or rather, smell it.”
