And you just know she won’t let you down.
Williams didn’t just win. She did so against the No. 2 seed in the tournament. She fought hard in the tiebreaker of the first set. She doesn’t look like a woman about to retire, but instead she’s at her peak in the game.
Mike Reiss @MikeReiss Serena. The heart and determination of a champion.
What a match.
Ben Rothenberg @BenRothenberg Unreal data:
Serena Williams is 23-2 in her last 25 matches against the top 2 players in the WTA, dating back to 2007.
(The only two losses were at Azarenka in 2013.) #USOpen

“That’s what I do best,” Williams said in a postgame interview. “I like a challenge and have the courage to take it. I haven’t competed a lot, but I’ve been practicing well.”
“I There is nothing to prove, I have nothing to win. I have absolutely nothing to lose,” she added. “…it was fun. I really enjoyed coming out and enjoying it.”

Serena, you just beat No. 2, how did you do that?
“Well, I’m a pretty good player…”
😂😂🤫🤫🤫🤫
It remains to be seen if Williams can continue to do this throughout the tournament. Who really cares? This is the old-fashioned Serena again. Nothing in the history of tennis has been better than witnessing this woman at her peak.

She has a long way to go in New York before a fairytale ending is possible. But watching her on Wednesday reminds us that even now, her greatness is more important than life. If anyone could put the perfect end to a storied career, it’s GOAT.
Of course, Williams isn’t the only race town. One of the biggest surprises of the day’s game was Maria Skkari’s shocking loss to Xiyu Wang, a women’s draw that left no top seed in just two rounds.
“It’s disappointing, it hurts because I feel so much better, I’m enjoying myself, I’m feeling good on the court , it was disappointing that my level was so low today,” she told reporters after the loss.
Of course there were some shocking upsets in the women’s draw overall. Defending champion Emma Raducanu and two-time champion Naomi Osaka were eliminated from Tuesday’s match, knocking out the previous two champions. This opens the door for players like Ons Jabeur and Coco Gauff, both winners on Wednesday . “I have a mission,” Jaber said. “I’m No. 5 in the world, so for me, I’m going to represent that number as much as possible so that I can really improve my game and I can really continue and improve my rankings, hopefully.”
Meanwhile, Goff will have a tough third-round matchup with the American Madison Keys.

After Goff blasted a 128 mph heater in the second round, it’s better to get ready for Goff’s serve, the third-fastest serving for U.S. women to open in history .
“Yeah, I don’t know how that happened. It feels like I’m not pushing that hard,” she told ESPN’s Tom Hamilton . “Sometimes I feel like when you’re trying to hit the ball hard, it’s still fast, but it shouldn’t be that hard.”
Granted, the Keys serve game is also on Wednesday:

On the men’s side, Andy Murray reached the third round in New York for the first time since 2016.
“Physically, this is the best I’ve felt in years,” Murray said after the round said. “My run is by far the best in a long time and it’s always been a very important part of my game. Especially now, a lot of people are playing a big ball and you have to be able to defend well .I feel like I’m doing it now. I feel like I’m getting closer to where I want to be and hopefully I can have a deep run here.”
Next is Matteo Berrettini in the third round.
