WGA Strike Affects 2023 Tony Awards?
The Hollywood Reporter revealed in May that as the Writers Guild of America strike continues, The awards ceremony will “move forward with unscripted telecasting”. Although Lin-Manuel Miranda, who is not in the WGA, was asked to write the show’s opening number shortly before the strike began on May 2 (the Miranda Family Fund is a long-time supporter of the Union Palace), he later stopped supporting the strikers.
News of the new format for the Tony Awards follows reports that the Tony Awards governing board has been rejected by the WGA for waivers or exceptions, despite the union confirming it will not picket this year’s event. However, the WGA later did encourage its members not to participate.
Who is hosting the 2023 Tony Awards?
Ariana DeBose — who hosted last year’s awards show — will return to host the 2023 Tonys, though a writers’ strike will limit her duty. Same goes for this year’s hosts, who won’t read from a teleprompter. According to THR June 7th, “presenters will only have cue cards with nominations, which is what they are asking for at this convention Full time to read.”
