The 49ers had to shrink their roster to 85 today. To that end, they released veteran defensive tackle Robert Nkeemdice.
The 49ers signed Nkeemdice before training camp amid optimism that he might make the roster, considering he was the former No. 1-talented draft pick, and then Plus the 49ers have the best defensive line coach in the NFL — Chris Kokurek.
To be fair, Nkeemditch does seem to have improved as training camp went on, and he made the preseason game against the Green Bay Packers on Friday night. The two did a great job. But frankly, he never really had a chance to make the 49ers’ roster — that’s just too much talent and depth, especially on the defensive line. This may be the deepest D-line in the NFL.
In retrospect, it’s credit that Nkemdiche took up the challenge and signed with the 49ers first because of how far away his odds of making the team were. Clearly, he was confident. And he still has a chance to make another team’s 53-man roster, which is probably why the 49ers are releasing him now and not later. They were polite to him so he could find another team soon. Perhaps his next team will be impressed by Nkemdiche’s time with the 49ers and his tapes from Game 1 of the preseason. Perhaps the experience was a positive one for him. Who knows, maybe he’ll even find his way back to the 49ers at some point.
