The exhibition presents images and videos of some of the most iconic and devastating events in our recent history, though they will not be presented visually, but rather through written descriptions. Visitors are thus invited to think and imagine the photos and videos with their mind’s eyes, a challenge to become active and responsible viewers rather than distracted passive voyeurs, questioning our responsibilities as consumers of images. A humane, just and healthy society cannot be made up of passive consumers.
Visual Literacy: A Critical Library
As we experience As we continue to consume vast quantities of photographs in our world, it is now more important than ever to ask ourselves how they reflect, communicate and shape cultural meaning. In today’s visually-oriented society, reading, understanding, and interpreting images is essential. Since the 1960 years—when the importance of visual literacy was recognized—many writers, intellectuals, critics, and art historians have been exploring how to learn from society, Analyzing photography from political perspectives, and semiotic perspectives.
“Visual Literacy: A Critical Library” is a series of books curated by Rica Cerbarano that includes works that have marked the history of photography criticism and contemporary publications have examined the current role of the image . It aims to provide a comprehensive bibliography that deals with the language of photography with conscious and critical sensibility.
Each of these books should represent milestones for artists, curators, editors and anyone who works with images, but the goal is for everyone to see to them because we firmly believe that visual literacy enables individuals to consciously engage with contemporary culture and society.
