Alessandro Michele announced that he will be leaving his post as Gucci’s creative director on Wednesday afternoon. The designer held the top job for seven years and worked for the company for over 20. In an Instagram post, Michele wrote: “Gucci has been my home, my breadwinner, for a very long time. My sincerest condolences to this extended family, and to all those who have cared for it and supported it Thanks, my biggest and heartiest hugs. With them, I have hoped, dreamed, imagined. Without them, everything I have created would not be possible.”
Michele What has been created, for the most part, is a frequent and popular presence on the world’s biggest red carpets. Some of the hottest celebrities – Harry Styles, Billie Eilish, Dakota Johnson and more – have built a visual identity that is inseparable from Michele’s eccentric taste. Let’s not forget his naughtiness! Some of the most indelible examples include Jared Leto carrying a replica of his own head up the stairs of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2019, wearing billowing scarlet silk and gleaming harness; A$AP Rocky wearing a silk hood in 20; and earlier this year, Jodie Turner in Acid green gloves at the Venice Film Festival; Harry Styles’ purple scarf at the 2019 Grammys; and Jessica Chastain’s ombre Oscars 2022 Dresses. Focusing on color, texture, and references (see: Lana del Rey’s Hedy Lamar ensemble at the 20 Grammys) Michelle will be missed at these events. Still, we can only hope he finds a way to keep us happy.
