In downtown Manhattan, among contemporary art galleries and graffitied cocktail bars, a crowd formed outside the Moxy Lower East Side. Throngs of people arrived to attend Prabal Gurung’s New York Fashion Week party, a celebration of his fall/winter 2024 collection, as well as the Lunar New Year. The party beckoned a diverse set of cool kids, from models to writers to actresses to designers. It was a major scene.
Co-hosted with art discovery platform Cohart, Gurung’s NYFW dinner took place at Silver Lining Lounge at the Moxy Lower East Side. The venue was flushed in red and blue décor in honor of the Lunar New Year, with red lanterns and fans, blue tablescapes, and red floral bouquets by Iris & Virgil. Guests included Gurung’s close friends Sarita Choudhury, Min Jin Lee, and Lisa Joy Nolan, all of whom also walked in Gurung’s runway show earlier in the day. Dinner attendees like Tina Leung, Miles Richie, Anjula Acharia, and Jeannie Mai enjoyed family-style dining paired with Martell cocktails inspired by the Year of the Dragon.
Dinner conversation was abuzz with Lunar New Year plans and Gurung’s collection. “I hope through my work that I am able to build a world where people feel seen,” Gurung shared with Vogue. “When I was designing the collection, it was all about this sense of comfort and community, like somebody hugging you. The textures reflect that, with a lot of shearlings and tactile fabrics.”
Actress Auli’i Cravalho, who recently starred in Mean Girls and just announced Moana 2, told Vogue, “I see Prabal as a creative who is really so very talented and doesn’t forget his heritage. I’ve worn him in the past and will continue to wear him in the future. I look for designers who speak to me, and Prabal is one of them.” Model Coco Rocha similarly shared fondness for the designer. “I always come with the perspective of model. At Prabal’s show today, I really appreciated how the designer found different muses on and off the runway. I was happy to see such a range of models. It felt very personal.”
Following the seated dinner, Gurung hosted an after-party at Loosie’s Nightclub. DJed by Shaun Ross and in partnership with The Prizm Group, the subterranean dance party had Gurung and friends on the dancefloor underneath a mosaic of disco balls. Guests included Joy Sunday, Bebe Wood, Phillip Lim, and Maripol. The party was certainly a fashionable way to usher in the Year of the Dragon.
