Ariel of The Little Mermaid is known for her flowing auburn mane. But, it turns out, mermaid makeup is just as important and iconic. “Makeup stylist Peter Swords King and I discussed the original concept very early on and we thought Ariel needed to be a natural, ethereal beauty,” says makeup artist Kat Ali, who shared details of actor Halle Bailey’s mermaid look on Instagram As a tribute to eager (and curious) fans. “Ariel is the youngest mermaid sister and we wanted to create a ‘no makeup’ look with a siren-inspired look, for a radiant, sophisticated, youthful look.”

While dreaming of Bailey’s fairytale aesthetic, the team focused on the skin, using Bioderma Micellar Water to cleanse and refresh before applying Glossier Priming Moisturiser, Avène Soothing Eye Contour Cream and Glossier the Balm Dot Com , healthy canvas. “I lightly applied MAC Face and Body Foundation (Classic)—less is more with this makeup,” says Ali. “Adding product is easier than removing it.”
Ali relies on Tom Ford’s Eye Color Quad Eyeshadow in Suspicion for Bailey’s warm, radiant eye makeup, noting that those recreated at home Makeup should be applied with fingers to get the most out of the product, smoothing out any harsh lines with a clean, fluffy brush. Don’t forget the spotlight! “It’s the lightest shade in the lid’s central quad,” she explains. Finally, the lips. “For Halle’s lips, she really likes to use a slightly darker visible lip liner than her own to introduce some subtle definition, so we used MAC Cork for that, and then I used a little Chanel Rouge Angelique lipstick,” says Ali.
