'Andorra' premieres darker, grittier 'Star Wars': 'We're telling the story of a complete revolution'

With the premiere of the upcoming Disney+ series Andor, STAR WARS is exploring new territories.

In episode , Andor will be more familiar with the sci-fi series Dive into a darker, grittier, more complex story than the traditional good versus evil story. That’s largely thanks to the show’s titular character, Cassian Andor (played by Diego Luna ).

“If you’re going to be doing something in Star Wars these days, it better be different, right? ‘ Luna told The Hollywood Reporter Thursday at the series’ Los Angeles launch. “We just wanted to take risks, we wanted to bring something new and different to the Star Wars universe.”

“[Cassian] is not clearly good or bad,” added Toby Haynes, director of the first three episodes. “He’s a good guy and he has to do bad things to get the job done. It’s very interesting territory for Star Wars . Usually, it’s very black and white. It’s more Grayscale.”

Showrunner Tony Gilroy “Really brought the audience with Their different journeys “get used to,” Haynes continued. “They won’t know where they stand. They don’t know if they can trust a character to live to the end of an episode. “

Described as a spy thriller, Andor takes place in “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” , Gareth Edwards’ independent film, tells the story of George Lucas Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope . In addition to starring, Luna serves as an executive producer on the show.

“What we know about [Cassian] in Rogue One is very specific, but the points are very strange,” creator Gilroy said of the titular character . “He’s a killer. He’s a saboteur. He’s a liar, he’s a seducer, he’s a leader. He’s a trusted member of the rebel coalition. But at the same time, at the end of the day, he’s a big-hearted Man, he will give his life to save everyone. It’s a very fascinating character.”

“Everyone on each side is very complex,” playing the antagonist and Imperial officer Cyril Kahn’s Kyle Soller added. “Cassian is a questionable hero, right? And Cyril has his own doubts about whether his moral code is extremely correct. Is it right to deprive others of power and life for what he believes in? This is an honest and tough human being Story, I think people have been waiting.”

Before Star Wars like The Mandalorian , The Book of Boba Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi have six to eight episodes per season, Andor is playing Season 1 ’s episodes – and, already for additional , the cast and crew are also gearing up to start production on the second season. In preparing to tell Cassian’s story, Gilroy discovered that the story needed a longer format.

“We’re telling the story of a complete revolution,” the creator said. “Once we started exploring characters and what we could do, everything that was available was there. I didn’t compare myself in any way, but you know, it’s really like someone saying, ‘You want to do war with Peace?’ You know what? It’s like a giant canvas.”

The show also gave fans a deeper look at the logo Sexual Star Wars historical character Mon Mothma, played by Caroline Blakiston in the original film, was later taken over by Genevieve O’Reilly in the prequel. In Andor, viewers will see Mon Mothma’s role in creating the Rebel Alliance as she infiltrates the Empire from within.

“She has always been an important person or monument in the universe,” O’Reilly said. “So now it feels really timely to have the opportunity to flesh out her character and to stand up from her side. I would also like to thank George Lucas for being in s. So it feels important now to have the opportunity to stand up for her and give this character a voice.”

and Andor ‘s event will lead to Rogue One , which Luna says can be watched without having to watch it the show.

“I think people who like Rogue One will like this show, but you don’t need to know Star Wars to enjoy the show,” the star said. “It has a beginning and an end. It has his own origin, which is cool. So viewers who aren’t too interested in Star Wars can watch Andor , it could be their way.”
