On this year’s red carpet, the usual assortment of jaw-dropping gowns of course made a splash – except now, many of them wouldn’t be without a pair of opera gloves complete. This year, trendy stars really took to the formal gauntlet – and somewhat unexpectedly – pairing their dresses with styles in patent leather, delicate lace or even sheer tulle. As seen by stars like Rihanna, Florence Pugh and Jodie Turner-Smith, it’s a sure-fire must-have accessory for the faltering world. Totally everywhere. Hollywood A-listers embraced opera gloves as early as 2020 and they’ve popped up in fashion ever since: long gloves appear in fall 2020 Runways for Proenza Schouler, Christian Dior and Simone Rocha. Over time, accessories started to become almost as commonplace as diamond necklaces or cocktail rings.
But that’s not to say all gloves look the same. At the October premiere of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Rihanna wore a sculptural Rick Owens gown with a pair of thick beige leather Gloves add an instant edge to the entire look. Look. At LACMA Gala in November, Olivia Wilde opted for a high-octane color, pairing bright red latex gloves with her beaded Gucci gown. Meanwhile, other celebs got more refined: At a Tiffany & Co. event in June, Florence Pugh adorned her black lace bra top with Emilia Emilia Wickstead’s dress was paired with a sheer, barely-there black glove.
Opera Gloves are as good as a great pair of shoes or bags it is good. It’s a smart investment: Matching a classic LBD, it does all the work of an ensemble. Plus, a pair will keep your hands warm in the winter. Win-win!
