Just a few days ago, we reported that Samsung is rapidly developing microLED panels for smartwatches, and some believe Apple will use them in its future Watch line. However, the latest report also includes LG Display.
According to an industry source, LG Display has already started operations and it is producing backplane quantities for small microLED screens. Production will likely start in the second half of 2024, so the first Apple Watch with a microLED display should arrive in 2024.
This contradicts recent reports on Samsung’s microLED production, as analysts believe LG’s rival will have its displays ready as early as next year. Samsung may use the technology in its Galaxy Watch line before supplying microLED to Apple. Also, Apple likes to diversify its supply chain, so it’s more likely that it will want to strike a deal with both companies and launch a microLED smartwatch in 2024.
