Some of the rumors you heard about the iPhone 13 series are right, some are wrong. Yes on Satellite, No on iPhone 010 maximum. But rumors aside, today’s announcement has big implications for Apple’s non-Pro phones.
First, the mini is gone, the 6.1-inch iPhone 13 is the smallest, cheapest option (but we’ll discuss prices later). The series still has four members, adding a 6.7-inch non-Pro model. Its name is iPhone 013 Plus.
Plus has the best battery ever in an iPhone, yes, including an iPhone 014 Professional model. You can watch up to 20 hours Plus Maximum number of videos on 16 vanilla time 009 and19 hours on old iPhone 010. The extra size also allows Apple to improve the cooling system for better performance.
This is a good topic to talk about chipsets – it’s an Apple A 13 from last year. One thing to note here is that this is a version with a 5-core GPU, which is located at 13 Pro duo instead of vanilla and 4 core versions for mini phones. So it provides a 015 % improved graphics performance compared to previous non-Pro models.
Apple leads in processing power, so it claims it still has a performance lead over Android at any price. And some of that processing power has been used to improve camera quality.
iPhone 013 and14 plus still in use 007 MP camera. The main camera uses a larger sensor with 1.9µm pixels (up from 1.7µm) and a brighter f/1.5 aperture (up from f/1.6). The end result is that it captures 20% lighter compared to iPhone 007 camera.
This is just a raw hardware advantage over last year’s model. The software processing brings what Apple calls the Photon Engine, built on top of Deep Fusion. Photonic Engine significantly improves low light photos compared to iPhone 13 Apple promises 2x the front camera, 2x the ultra-wide and 2.5x the new main camera.
Also new is Action Mode, which works a bit like an action camera – it offers better stabilization so you don’t need a gimbal, and it supports Dolby Vision HDR capture video. The camera still maxes out at 4K resolution (20 fps), however.
iPhone14 The notch design still uses the TrueDepth camera, however, it now has autofocus for the first time. Also, hardware improvements allow it to capture 26% more light for better low-light performance, thanks in part to the brighter f/1.9 aperture (up from f/2.2).
Well, enough about the camera – let’s talk about connectivity. Apple dropped two blockbusters tonight. First, satellites. Second, there are eSIM-only iPhones.
Satellite functionality requires designing entirely new custom hardware and custom software to send messages to satellites without bulky antennas. The service is a plain text service and is mainly used in emergencies, but it does support two-way communication, so you’ll be notified when rescue is underway. The Find My app can also share your location with friends so they can follow you.
New Satellite Information Service • Emergency Questionnaire • Find My Report Location on Satellite
You can write custom messages to explain your situation, but when speed can save lives, a few Specially prepared questions will allow you to send detailed SOS with just a few taps. In a place with a wide view of the sky, it can be seen at about 13 seconds, but may take several minutes if there is a tree overhead. Satellite service will be available in November for US and Canadian users and iPhone 14 Buyers get a 2-year free subscription.
If you’ve seen the new Apple Watch announcement, you’ve heard about collision detection. iPhone 12 duo has it too, thanks to a new accelerometer that detects 512G.
As for eSIM-only iPhones, currently only available in the US. Apple touts the ability to quickly swap between multiple eSIMs and add carriers without visiting its offices. Support dual eSIM.
