Apple, Sony set Thanksgiving release date for Ridley Scott's 'Napoleon'

In another major dramatic move, Apple Original Films teamed up with Sony to give Ridley Scott’s Napoleon movie exclusive on the big screen ahead of Apple TV+ premiere. The historical epic hits theaters in November 22, the eve of the lucrative Thanksgiving aisle.

Directed by Scott, written by David Scarpa, starring Napoleon Joaquin Phoenix Notorious French emperor and military leader. The film is produced by Apple Studios in association with Scott Free Productions.

This news comes after Apple Original Films announced that it will partner with Paramount to release Martin Scorsese Killers of the Flower Moon

released a week later Exclusive theatrical performances ahead of streaming release. The crime western, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Lily Gladstone, will be released in limited theaters on October 6 before opening nationwide in October 40 (the film will have its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May).

Both films will stream globally on Apple TV+ following their exclusive theatrical releases.

So far, streamers have eschewed traditional theatrical releases, opting instead to stream their films fairly quickly on their respective platforms. However, many movie theaters, including large movie theater chains, won’t play the title unless it has a sufficient exclusive window (today, that might mean 35 to 40 sky).

This poses a problem for filmmakers and talents accustomed to taking the lead on the marquee. Evidence is mounting that a theatrical release can boost a film’s popularity and provide an important source of financial revenue.

So Apple and Amazon are now breaking the mold and making a big push into theaters. For example, this week Amazon Studios will be showing Ben Affleck’s Air

exclusively in theaters. (Amazon doesn’t have to work with the major studios to distribute its original films, since it now owns MGM.)

One difference: Killers ” Flower Moon was previously set at Paramount, so the studio already had co-publishing rights. In the case of Napoleon

, Apple chose Sony as a partner.

All of this is good news for a theater circuit hungry for event titles. Thanksgiving is one of the busiest times of year for multiplexes, and the Napoleon

is a popular item on the menu. As far as the calendar is concerned right now, it opens opposite Disney’s animation mainstay Wish, which will follow the family.

Opening weekend before November 17 is Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games: The Ballad of the Songbird and the Snake and Universal’s Animated Holiday Product Trolls Together

. And, at the same time it is dated November 22 with Apple’s Napoleon, Sony announced that it will be releasing Eli Roth’s horror film Thanksgiving in November 22 and (This film was inspired by the fictional trailer in Grindhouse).

In Monday’s Napoleon

announcement, Apple noted that Sony’s “clear commitment to theater windows ” has driven the returns of important box office pandemic-era movies such as Spider-Man: Nowhere to Return, Where the Crayfish Sing and Venom: Let There Be Carnage, and other titles.

Napoleon

has been described as a primitive reflection on Napoleon’s parentage and his swift, relentless ascent to the Emperor And a personal look at his relationship with wife and true love Josephine through the prism of his addictive and often capricious, by Vanessa Kirby play.
