You can now enjoy surround sound while streaming YouTube TV content on Apple TV and Fire TV devices. As The Verge reports, after rolling out the feature to Android TV, Google TV and Roku devices, the streaming TV service has expanded the list of devices that support its shows and movies with support for 5.1 audio June. YouTube TV began testing 5.1-channel audio for the first three devices back in March, while also committing to support Apple TV and Fire TV devices, as well as game consoles. The rollout covers two of those three — a tweet on YouTube TV’s official page says the service is still bringing features to consoles.
YouTube TV’s help page doesn’t yet explicitly mention Apple TV as a supported device, but it does list Fire TV Stick 4K Max, Fire TV Stick, Fire TV Stick Lite, Fire TV Cube, Fire TV Stick 4K and Fire TV Stick with 4K Ultra HD. It’s important to note that not all YouTube TV content offers surround sound, only those that do. 5.1 audio is automatically turned on whenever the user is streaming on a compatible device. That said, those who want to make sure it’s available for a specific video can do so by playing it, going to “More” under the player controls and selecting the “Error” icon. YouTube TV’s “nerd stats” will show at the top of the video, and if it has surround sound, it should show AC-3/EAC-3 in the codecs section.
