She is one of those artists who exists seamlessly at the intersection of fashion and music. To think of other very popular examples, consider Frank Ocean, Rihanna and her partner A$AP Rocky. In fact, the latter is a partnership with the brand that makes Madonna’s luggage: Shane Gonzales’ Midnight Studios, who just showed up at New York Fashion Week last week.

The label is rooted in music and youth culture, and found Gonzales says its unique style is a fusion of rock and street. “New York Fashion Week has been a long time coming for me. I thought I would do my first show a few years ago, but I have had a lot of work and restructuring related to the brand,” he said, adding that since founding Midnight Studios He’s been in the “mixtape or demo” phase since, and the show was meant to be a “debut album.”

He has found a way to advance his brand through a variety of successful partnerships that have shaped the Midnight Studios world as a fashion brand and an aesthetic world. Gonzales tends to wear head-to-toe black and sunglasses, but he’s approachable and relaxed when talking about his work. Primarily based on menswear, his work is graphic, precise, and softly aggressive in both graphics and tailoring. It may have been unintentional to take styling and aesthetic cues from Hedi Slimane and Raf Simons, two youth culture-inspired menswear-driven designers.
In the world of Midnight Studios, Gonzalez and his business partner Luis Cano established three entities and let his loyal community interact with their work as they please – choose your own style of adventure if you can. This spring, Gonzalez teamed up with Finnish goth rock band HIM— It was one of his favorite bands when he was nine years old. The main graphic element of the collection is the band’s logo, the heartagram, used in several pieces in the collection, including as the new monogram logo. One of the most striking elements of the collection is a series of leather pieces covered in twill mesh. “HIM’s album is called
The series is named after a song by HIM “And Love Said No”, which is the main source of inspiration. “We also have a lot of tattoo artists that I love doing their own thing,” he said of other graphics. Another chest tattoo from one of the singers in the band: creepy and accidental, Gonzalez spotted a model at casting with the exact same chest tattoo. Of course, the model opened shirtless.
