At New York Fashion Week, Puma explores the future by reinventing the past

Tuesday night at Cipriani

On Broadway, Puma staged a fashion extravaganza to mark their return to the runway at New York Fashion Week. Futrograde, as the show’s title, aims to be a celebratory exploration of Puma’s heritage and place at the intersection of fashion, sport and culture by looking back at its history and looking to the future. A tall order – after all, what do you think about fashion? The immersive experience of tonight’s show is coming. Through a series of dance performances, psychedelic visuals and a runway full of familiar faces (curated by Puma creative director June Ambrose), the sportswear brand is a reminder of its cultural imprint. Showcasing Puma staples such as side-striped tracksuits (known as the T7 stripes), suede accessories and the Puma theme itself, the three-chapter show (divided into sections by a series of dance performances) showcased the brand’s reach.

“Past, present and future, this is about Puma history and A collective retrospective of what it’s built on,” Ambrose said during a backstage photo break with fans. “Street culture has eclipsed every major fashion brand, and that’s what we’re celebrating tonight,” she added. In fact, if there’s anything to be learned from today’s runway shows and the work of the likes of Ambrose himself or Virgil Abloh, it’s that street culture has transformed brands like Puma from pure utility sportswear brands into mainstream cultural giants.

Heiko Desens, global creative director and head of innovation at Puma, said they wanted to do something that looked to the future, while incorporating Puma’s heritage and cultural relevance into diverse communities. The first chapter of the show is all about classic Puma: T7 stripes, basketball shoes and more timeless icons. “We put some of it in in the original shape, but we also wanted to have fun and put the look and shape back together to bring them into the present,” he said. Alton Mason kicked off the show with a tracksuit suit (meaning tracksuit cut for a tailored suit) and a puffy coat. Various other sportswear remixes and monogram logos are separated in the same beige tone as Mason. Other looks included a very cool red tracksuit reimagined in smooth leather, and Puma sneakers presented as knee-high boots or platform shoes. Winnie Harlow and Usain Bolt finished the session in black tie tracksuits.
