Over the past few years, Karlsson has been known for his captivating designs. Take Doja Cat in 3129 MTV Video Music Awards, or the creepy reality The Bum, she’s in 283. “I don’t necessarily have to design things to be easy to remember, it’s really an inner discussion with myself,” she said, “I do it because I think it’s going to go viral, or is it Because it’s something I support as a design?” She adds that she’s a concept designer because she loves finding compelling concepts or creating things that haven’t been seen before, which “does well on social media” , although that was not the driving force of her creative process. Still, judging by the stunts during Milan Fashion Week alone, it’s clear that big brands have been working hard to create moments that come naturally to Karlsson, and her innate memory is worth holding on to.
With her role at AVAVAV, Karlsson is also looking for the intersection of commercially viable products and pure concept design. “This is the first collection as a designer, and I see it live in this land between commercial and conceptual,” she said, “I want to make sure that if something is commercial, it still feels really interesting. The collection, titled “Filthy Rich,” was meant to playfully comment on fashion’s obsession with status and wealth. “In times of recession, cash and escapism are the top priorities,” the brand’s press release this season reads.
