On the first Monday in May, the biggest stars in the world ascend the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art for the 2023 Met Gala, celebrating “Karl Lagerfeld : A Line of Beauty.” Fittingly, the dress code simply read “In Honor of Karl,” implying that the designers and stars pulled out all the stops for the occasion. Among the best-dressed attendees was model Anok Yai, designed by Prabal Gurung, in a gold dress with a hemline that seemed to evaporate into thin air.
“Based on his [Lagerfeld’s] Chanel couture show, this particular dress has been on my mind for a long time,” shared Gurung. What most people don’t realize is that Yai’s look was two separate pieces: a skirt with oxidized gold and silver hand-embroidered ombré sequin sequins and beaded trumpet tassels, and a hand-embroidered layered oxidized gold and silver sequins. In the episode, Gurung goes on to explain that when he received the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Award at 2023 it was presented to him by Lagerfeld “I’ll never forget that exchange, it’s with me forever. It made me a better designer,” he recalls.
