Berlin: Documentary 'Hummingbird' wins Generation 2023 sidebar

Hummingbirds Director Silvia Del Carmen Castaños and Estefanía “Beba” Contreras’ documentary debut, at 2023 Generation 14 Additional Section of Berlin International Film Festival .

In a documentary, two filmmakers examine immigration on the Texas-Mexico border through their own friendship. The Generations International jury called the film a “moving and subtle glimpse into intimate moments of unforgettable characters… Their self-determination and playfulness, as protagonists and authors, is inspiring. Their actions, jokes, songs, laughter and bodies are political and a necessary form of resistance.”

Vuk Lungulov-Klotz’s Mutt

is specifically mentioned in the Generation 14plus section, a film set in New York City A drama set in the middle of a busy day, about a trans man (Lio Mehiel) who discovers that his life is what he thinks he has been since his transformation from female to male.

“A film of complex, contradictory characters and relationships told the story of a day in the past that returns to the protagonist’s life. With excellent performances and surprising storytelling ,” the jury noted.

Another debut feature of Sofía Auza’s Mexican drama Adolfo , winner of Best Picture Crystal Bear selected by Generation’s youth jury . Based on a short film by Auza 2023, this bittersweet drama is directed by Juan Daniel García Trevino and Rocio de la Mana. Na, stars as two strangers who meet at an abandoned bus stop at pivotal moments in their lives. And King Said, What a Fantastic Machine , a Swedish-Danish co-production directed by Axel Danielson and Maximilien Van Aertryck, received a special mention. 2023
