Museum will open next month

The Great Egyptian Museum, located on the Giza Plateau near the world-famous Pyramids of Giza, will be the largest archaeological museum in the world.

The commissioning of the project, designed by Irish architect Heneghan Peng and designed by Arup and Buro Happold, began as early as 2008. In January 2012, Besix-Orasom JV was awarded a third contract worth $810m (£721m).

With a total floor area of 490,000 square meters, the museum is one of the largest structures in Egypt because of the pyramids themselves. The project has been completed in stages and some galleries are already open.

The building has a ceiling height of 32 meters and cantilevers as high as 26 meters. Steel, marble and white concrete are widely used in construction.

The museum will house thousands of items documenting the history of ancient Egyptian civilization, including approximately 5,300 items from ancient Egyptian tombs. Tutankhamun will be on display for the first time since its discovery in 1922.

The project was originally scheduled for completion in 2021, but due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic and will open in November 2022.

The Besix-Orascom joint venture has completed 115 million man-hours since the start of the project. Of these, the last 20 million man-hours did not have any serious accidents.
