Between New York Fashion Week, the Emmys and the Toronto International Film Festival, celebrities have plenty of opportunities to dress up. Across all of these events, the best-dressed stars were those who challenged convention by choosing striking looks that rejected classic glamour. Hollywood A-listers do it by opting for high-impact colors, voluminous silhouettes, or dresses with shimmering sequins that can’t help but shine.
Judy Turner-Smith turned heads in her bright orange Gucci chiffon maxi dress at the Kering Foundation Cares Women’s Dinner during New York Fashion Week. Emma Watson also shined in her white lace Alexander McQueen design. There were two standout style moments at the Emmys: Zendaya’s custom Valentino gown channeled Old Hollywood in a whole new way (it was based on the brand’s archive1980 designs), and Maude Apatow’s fitted Vivienne Westwood corset dress adds more punk to a formal evening gown.
There were also moments of more casual style during fashion week that also made an impact. At Tom Ford’s spring 2023 show, Erykah Badu led the front row in sequined trousers, a metallic leopard-print jacket and a striking faux fur hat. At Michael Kors’ show, Keke Palmer proved that skinny knits can be classy: Her slinky yellow dress with a matching cape jacket was perfect for stepping into fall.
