Team boss Fred Vasseur recently admitted that reliability issues at this year’s Alfa Romeo were costly, and not just those involving the power unit.

“As always, it was never the same thing,” he said. “I think the Ferrari engine is a step forward. We’ve done the same with the chassis. And I think Valtteri and Zhou [Guanyu] are performing. Overall, it’s a good step.

“Now, we also have some issues with reliability in terms of results. It cost us a lot of money in points and we were in very good form in some races like Jeddah or Silverstone and in some cases with Monday as well.

“It’s a real shame for us, and champ. But it’s what it is, we just need to fix it for the second part of the season.”

Alfa Romeo is currently sixth in the constructors’ standings with 51 points and has not scored in the past six races since Bottas and Zhou finished seventh and eighth in Canada.
