Broadcast TV Pilots in 2023: The Complete Guide

If the broadcast pilot season is any indicator, peak TV numbers are waking up.

Ten years ago, ABC,

CBS, CW , Fox and NBC collectively Ordered a surprising 22 Pilot season comedy and drama 22. That number, the most from THR Started tracking total volume in , now considered a relic of the past.

With COVID- The pandemic effectively wiped out the pilot season 2021, the network was forced to adopt a year-round programming strategy that many had discussed but had yet to actually execute. Now that the shift is in full swing, pilot orders across the five networks may hit record lows after a collective recovery 20 last season of comedy and drama.

What’s more, the recession has also pushed broadcasters to be more careful about how many scripts they buy and which of them get made. Network executives — including the new presidents of CBS, The CW and Fox — are also taking more time to get development right. The Night Court reboot is a prime example of this strategy, as NBC was in 2021- Order the season before the series in September 35. The comedy, which stars and executive produces Melissa Rauch, premiered last month after the pilot episode was filmed with reshoots and some recasting, quickly getting updated. The strategy is that CBS is moving to the Justin Hartley drama Never Game and NBC is working with two The author found and irrational (All earmarked for next season, but developed in 2021).

Speaking of the new executive regime, the CW’s almost complete shift from US scripted originals will also have an impact on the entire pilot season The amount of influence generated as a network is now mainly controlled by the station group Nexstar, which previously averaged about 6 orders per season. Meanwhile, Fox has added a steady stream of original animated series to its pipeline, as the broadcast network — now overseen by its former unscripted chief — takes a more polished (read: cost-friendly) approach to scripting. At CBS, the network’s former current programming chief is responsible for filling several holes in one of broadcast’s most stable schedules.

With all of the above in mind, let’s look at the pilot scramble 2021- as ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC and (maybe) the CW sift through scripts and move forward in search of the next breakout hit.
