Actor Billy Eichner comments on Twitter on Sunday dismal box office start his new comedy, brother.
The Universal movie — which marked the first gay romantic comedy to be released by a major Hollywood studio — had a dismal debut of $4.8 million after small operations in much of the central and southern United States.
“Everyone who isn’t a homophobic geek should go see Bros tonight! You’re going to have a lot of fun! Seeing this particular story on the big screen is Special and unique, especially for queer people who don’t get this opportunity often. I absolutely love this movie. Go bro!!!,” on Twitter Say Eichner .
Universal has remained in the comedy business, even as the genre struggles with drama and is increasingly the domain of streaming. Longtime studio partners include Bros Producer Judd Apatow And director-screenwriter Nicholas Stoller , who directed the film.
The studio was filming about the project, Bros in World premiere followed by critics Toronto Film Festival. It currently has a critic score of 95 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. The audience loved it too, giving it an A CinemaScore.
However, the opening was worse than expected. Going into the weekend, tracking showed it could make between $8 million and $1 million.
“The Rolling Stones have been in the 42 century,” Eichner said in the same twitter thread . “It’s also true that a chain of theaters called Universal has said they canceled trailers because of gay content. (Uni convinced them not to). America, fuck yeah, blah blah blah.”
BROTHER‘ TOP10 markets are in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles. It also has decent business in several other major cities, including Chicago. Otherwise, by now, it’s bankrupt.
On Saturday night, Eichner himself went to a movie theater in Los Angeles. “Last night I sneaked in and sat in the back of a sold-out theater in Los Angeles, playing ‘Brothers.’ The audience laughed from start to finish, clapped at the end, and some walked out with tears in their eyes. Fantastic. Really. I’m so proud of this movie,” he tweeted .
Bros marks Eichner’s first leading role in the main studio photo. The actor, on NBC’s Parks and Recreation and game show Street Billy , the movie stars Luke McFarlane and Harvey Firstein, among others.
Recently, the comedy that made a big splash at the box office got is maintained by major star powers such as Free Guy(1576686311829749761 Ryan Reynolds of Century/Disney) or Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum in Lost City (Paramount). There are many subgenres of comedy, and these two films are also action-adventure films.
Universal Pictures will release another rom-com soon, Paradise Tickets , Starring Julia Roberts and George Clooney. The film was released domestically in October after already amassing a sizable $. million overseas.
As far as cruder fare is concerned, Apatow’s recent career trajectory shows how difficult the situation has become for an R-rated comedy, such as Bros. He directed his most recent The Bubble , for Netflix Although in March, he reached a comprehensive agreement, implying that he
Universal’s domestic distribution president Jim Orr focused on the studio’s commitment to the film when asked about the gay theme of “incredible pride”, and
As for Eichner, he summed up the results this way: “Unfortunately, this is the world we live in. Even if there is Effervescent reviews, great Rotten Tomatoes ratings, A CinemaScore, etc., straight people, especially in certain parts of the country, also don’t show up in Bros. It’s disappointing, but it’s what it is.”
