Cannes: Anamaria Malinka and Jean-Marc Barr to co-direct Iwan Murphy's 'Whitefriars'

A pair of actors from the Cannes Film Festival winning project – Anamaria Marinca ( Cristian Mungiu’s 4 months 3 weeks and 2 days ) and Jean-Marc Barr (Lars Von Trier’s Europa) — are teaming up in a new film that marks the official French-Irish partnership.

The project is White Friar and will mark the actor-turned-filmmaker’s feature directorial debut Ewan Murphy. White Friar has been described as a romantic thriller inspired by the life of Irish Catholic priest Tom Murphy, who also served as an RAF officer. The Wing Commander’s Forces in World War II and his relationship with Eva Hofer, a Hungarian Jew living in Vienna. According to the official synopsis, the film “examines morality, sex and identity.”

Ewan Murphy, who happens to be Tom Murphy Grandnephew of Father Fee, who wrote the script. He appeared in Cannes on Friday to sign a co-production deal between France’s Valentina Films and Ireland’s Max Films at a special event at the Irish Pavilion, hosted by Cinema Ireland and the National Film Centre.

The project is part of a co-production agreement signed in Paris last December by Niall Burgess, the Irish ambassador to France, and Rima, the French culture minister, according to the production partner’s official press release on Friday. Contribution, Abdul-Malak.

France and Ireland This new co-production agreement between us is an incredible opportunity for these two great filmmaking and storytelling communities to collaborate,” said Xavier Castano, head of Valentina Films, who will serve as executive producer.

Max Brady from Dublin’s Max Films added: “Over the past year , working with Xavier and his team has been a wonderful experience, and we are excited to take another step toward telling this great story.”

Murphy, previously Having lent his talents to The Darkness , now that he says the deal is signed, the team is very much looking forward to getting into pre-production. “I am very grateful to our fantastic teams in Ireland and France in front of the camera and behind the scenes for all the work they have done over the past few years.”

Castano & Jean -Jean-Jacques Annaud collaborated on two of his films, Two Brothers and Wolf Totem. Brady and his Max Films have Paul Reiser-starrer The Problem with People on deck. Marinca recently starred in Goran Stolevski’s favorite You Won’t Be Alone, while Barr recently starred in Aga Woszczynksa’s Silent Land.
