Cannes names Spain country of honor

Cannes Film Market, the Film Market, will this year pay homage to the Spanish film industry by naming Spain the official country of honor as 2022.

Spain is the second country of honor at the Marché, after India last year. The tribute aims to highlight a country’s film industry, from feature films and documentaries to animation and extended reality. The Spanish Ministry of Trade and Investment and its Institute of Cinematic and Audiovisual Arts (ICAA) will collaborate with Marché to highlight Spanish content and talent at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Cinema, the umbrella promotion group from Spain, will be there again to increase the presence of Spanish industry professionals.

“We are proud to have Spain as the country of honor for this special market edition,” said Guillaume Esmiol, Executive Director of Marché. In my first year as head of Marché, I’m especially grateful and excited to have produced this 2022 version of The Creative Country. Spain will have a place in the Marché du Film’s program and looks forward to sharing with the entire film professional community its ambition to support international co-productions and strengthen Spain as a major European audiovisual center.”

Spain’s audiovisual industry has continued to prosper over the past few years, partly due to the success of streaming media such as Netflix’s Money Heist and Élite and a new generation of filmmakers whose work is internationally resonate.

The Spanish government is investing 1.6 billion euros ($1.7 billion) in earmarked public investments aimed at passing the 730 Promotion of Audiovisual Production in Spain Percentage 730. Spanish experts, financiers and policymakers will participate in Marché’s Cannes Next and impACT programs, focusing on the future of the entertainment industry and the industry’s environmental impact and sustainability efforts. Spain’s latest short films and emerging talent will also be highlighted at the Cannes Short Film Corner and Rendez-vous Industry, the festival’s official forum that connects emerging filmmakers with producers, distributors, buyers Connect with other industry professionals.
