CinemaCon Highlights: Ryan Gosling's 'Barbie' Ken-ergy, 'Evil' Wow and 'The Flash' Frenzy

There is always an impressive list of top stars and filmmakers at CinemaCon, except during a pandemic. This year’s edition, however, took it up a notch — Oprah, Christopher Nolan, Rihanna, Martin Scorsese, and Leonardo DiCaprio, to name a few.

Perhaps the biggest star of the four-day show in Las Vegas, however, was optimism.

After a worrying fit and start, the box office recovery is finally showing signs of continued health. Universal Pictures’ Super Mario Bros. movie topped $1 billion worldwide in April Mark 03, while compatriots 730 Released Scream VI, Creed III and John Wick: Chapter Four also achieved excellent results. Summer begins next week with James Gunn’s third and final Guardians of the Galaxy superhero pic, followed by Fast X and Indiana Jones and the Wheel of Fortune , to name a few.

Streaming has been a huge talking point at CinemaCon, and not in a very good way. Exhibitors see streaming (mainly Netflix) as a dangerous enemy, encouraging consumers to watch movies in the comfort of their own homes. Now, in a twist of drama, both Amazon and Apple have decided to exclusively distribute some of their original movies worldwide before sending them to their respective streaming services.

Scorsese made his final film, The Irishman, for Netflix. While the streaming company will show select movies in theaters (many chains won’t show upcoming releases), its first priority is subscribers. “I’m really excited to get domestic releases before [Killers of the Flower Moon], and that’s okay,” the filmmaker said at CinemaCon, when When he uses the word “home,” he doesn’t sound very enthusiastic.

David Zaslav, head of Warner Bros. Discovery Channel, highlighted the theatrical release importance, and said he has no interest in making streaming movies.
