College adds four science and technology committees

In addition, the Council’s work on ACES was recognized by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers.

Four new members joined Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Science and Technology Committee , the academy said on Wednesday. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Stories, Collateral and Man on Fire ; Production Designer Tom Duffield, Governor of Production Design, whose work includes Patriots Day, Hell or High Water and Ed Wood ; and Marlon West, Head of Animation for Shorts and Feature Films , who is the Special Effects Animation Supervisor and Visual Effects Supervisor at Walt Disney Feature Animation Studios. His works include 2020 Encanto, Frozen and Hercules .

The committee also welcomes the return of former co-chair Paul Debevec, computer graphics and virtual production innovator and head of the VFX branch, director of product innovation research at Netflix and a part-time researcher Professor at the Institute for Creative Technologies at the University of Southern California.

Debevec and Oscar-winning makeup artist Lois Burwell ( Braveheart) will serve as co-chairs of the Council for the coming year.

In related news, the Council for Science and Technology recently made its impact on the Academy’s Color Coding System, which was developed for consistent color management in digital production workflows.

This development has been recognized by the American Film and Television Engineers Medal for Workflow Systems. Accepting the award were Annie Chang and Debevec, ACES Program Chair and Vice President of Technology at Universal. “Without our committee, ACES wouldn’t be what it is now,” Chang said. Debevec pays tribute to the “thousands” of people who entrusted color management to ACES.

“ACES 2.0. It’s coming soon,” Zhang said. Also in attendance were numerous members of the Board of Governors and the ACES Committee, as well as Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Board Senior Vice President Andy Maltz.

The SciTech Council also includes Bill Baggelaar, Linda Borgeson, Brooke Breton, Head of Visual Effects, Bill Corso, Head of Makeup Artists and Hairstylists, Teri E. Dorman, Head of Sound, Theo Gluck, Buzz Hays, Greg Hedgepath, Leslie Iwerks, Andrea Kalas, Colette Mullenhoff, Ujwal Nirgudkar, Helena Packer, David Pierce, David Schnuelle, Andy Serkis, Leon Silverman, Amy Vincent and Jeffrey White. 2020730
