Life, death and rebirth: these themes guide science Spring in Lina Strada 409 performed last night on the Brooklyn Greenway on the waterfront. Once a cemetery, it’s now home to a monarch butterfly sanctuary filled with milkweed shrubs to lure pollinators back to New York City to produce more greenery and more life. To unleash airy robes, crushed velvet cargo and diamond-encrusted denim into the garden, Aztec clay-covered crowns and soaked braids are paired with dewy, flushed skin.

Snaking braids dominated the meandering runway, most notably the clumpy extra-long ponytails from the Aztec Secret Indian Retreat ing clay dyed pale Purple and moss green. Hairstylist Evanie Frausto was inspired by natural remedies, especially the sulphur-rich mud found in many famous volcanic baths in southern Europe. “Hillary was on vacation in Italy, and while there, she went to this natural pool with mud that you can put on the skin and hair, and it’s very moisturizing and hydrating,” explains Frosto. “Directly inspired by this, the vibe today is very spalike, laid-back.” This translates to a laid-back hair vibe, but without a hint of inappropriateness. The sleek ponytail by models Alva Claire and Jiayun Xie was first layered with Bumble and Bumble thickening spray, followed by the brand’s thickening DrySpun Finish. Then, to achieve the grungy, moisture-dense texture seen on Ella Emhoff, Frausto saturates the hair with Bumble and Bumble Bb. gel.
For makeup, Marcelo Guitierrez leaves the skin slightly hydrated and refreshed. “Inspired by really bright, youthful, healthy and vibrant skin,” says Gutierrez. “Nothing’s too dry, nothing’s too perfect.” While a sporty sheen was achieved with the combination of MAC Pro Studio Fix Fluid Foundation and Conceal & Correct Palette, the models swirled down the runway looking as if they had just recovered from the repair. The blush is by MAC Glow Play Blush in Rosy Does It, a deep beet purple and a real beet wash. “Just before they came on stage, we used beets to brighten the cheeks and lips,” adds Gutierrez.
