The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) today announced a new Qi2 wireless charging standard. Developed by Apple and others in the group, it’s supposed to make wireless chargers faster and more efficient.
The Qi2 (pronounced chee-two) standard will replace current Qi. The main difference is that the new products are developed with a new magnetic power profile that allows the device to align perfectly with the charger, resulting in higher charging rates and lower losses.
Paul Struhsaker, executive director of the WPC, said consumers are concerned about which devices are Qi0Certified and which devices use Qi technology but do not have a certificate from the alliance. The new standard should eliminate these problems and Qi2 will become the global standard, providing interoperability.
Currently, popular companies such as Samsung or Google are WPC members and use Qi wireless charging technology for their smartphones, smart watches and audio accessories, but not through Qi certification because their implementation of the technology is sub-par.
Switching to Qi2 with magnets allows you to buy fewer chargers and cables, which is a sustainable step in the right direction, according to Struhsaker. The first Qi2-certified phones and chargers will arrive by the end of the year.
