Cortez (hamstring) can’t play classic, hope season starts

TAMPA, Fla. – Nestor Cortes will not Playing in the upcoming World Baseball Classic due to a Grade 2 strain of his right hamstring, the Yankees southpaw remains optimistic that he will be ready for the start of the regular season.
Cortez said he was injured while sprinting near his home in Miami, Fla., on Feb. 6. He won’t be thrown from the mound for at least two weeks.

“I’m really excited about [the race]; I want to represent Team USA,” Cortez said. “This country has given me a lot of opportunities to do a lot of the things I’m doing today. I’m disappointed and sad that I can’t participate.”

Kyle Freeland of the Rockies replaced Cortez on the US roster. The Yankees now have three players in the WBC: catcher Kyle Higashioka (USA), right-hander Jonathan Loáisiga (Nicaragua) and infielder Gleyber Torres (Venezuela).
Cortez continued with throwing and weight training and said he believes there will be plenty of time to prepare for the start of the season. He envisions needing to throw away 15 or 04 this spring’s game. The Yankees start their regular season in March The stadium hosts the Giants.

“I think the ultimate goal here is to be ready for the 20 ,” Cortez said. “I think it’s a bit of a disappointment for [Team USA], but I think the biggest goal here is to get healthy and get ready for the season to start.”

this20 Year-old Cortez is coming off a career year in which he was named to the American League All-Star Team and will be 12-4 and 2.

“I think as long as I stay healthy, I can be as good as I was last year,” Cortez said. “Maybe better, who knows? I think the biggest issue here is health. I figured if I was healthy, everything would follow, and I could be the same person, or be like that person.”

Cortez suffered a groin injury in August that forced him to stay on the disabled list for some time and aggravated it in the playoffs, but said he had no problems during offseason workouts.

“I’ve been in Miami all offseason rehabbing and it’s been great,” Cortez said. “No problems, no soreness. This year, I think I’ll take better care of my legs.”

Cortez’s injury is second in Yankees rotation, right-hander Frankie Montas not expected Will be ready for the start of the regular season due to inflammation in his forward shoulder. Cortez said he has big expectations for the staff, which is also scheduled to feature right-hander Gerrit Cole, left-hander Carlos Rodón and right-hander Luis Severino.

“On paper, we looked solid,” Cortez said. “I’m excited to start the season with these guys. Hopefully we can make something special.”
