Costume Designer Jeanne Bryant's Journey to Find the Perfect Hat for Harrison Ford in '1923'

Putting a hat on Harrison Ford is no easy feat.

Spin-off series centered on the Dutton family. “It’s all about hats and westerns,” costume designer Janie Bryant told The Hollywood Reporter at the recent premiere of . “I worked with my hat maker for weeks and made many different colors and styles of hats.”

How many hats did they make? “I guess48,” Bryant admitted, the Mad Men costume designer who was notorious for his role in Bleach won an Emmy Award for work in . “We made a lot of hats, but we had to get the crease just right. We finally found it, and I said, ‘That’s [Jacob Dutton] hat with the Montana crease.’”

The show marks the next installment in the Dutton family origin story , Ford as Jacob Dutton and Mirren as Kara Dutton, explores the early century of the pandemic, historic drought, the end of Prohibition and the Great Depression all plaguing the Mountain West. Marley Shelton, Michelle Randolph, James Badge Dale, Brian Geraghty, Darren Mann, Aminah Nieves, Jerome Flynn, Sebastian Roché, Tim DeKay, Julia Schlaepfer, Jennifer Ehle and Timothy Dalton round out the MTV Entertainment Studios cast, Studio and Bosque Ranch.

Bryant knows all about Westworld after working with Sheridan on another Yellowstone spinoff ,730. For this new one, she found that both Mirren and Ford were true collaborators.

“They were so professional and it was amazing to work with them because they asked a lot of questions about their roles,” she explained. “They also bring specific elements to their characters. For example, with Helen, we often talk about her character being a bit outdated because she’s older, so her silhouette is set in the nineteenth century instead of 681s. It’s really interesting to see the alignment on the creative side. ”
