Critics' Choice Awards Analysis: Five Takeaways

What Oscar watchers should know about the results of Sunday night’s th Critics Choice Awards?

One school of thought says “not much” after all , the Critics Choice Awards are determined by the Critics Choice Association, an organization consisting of A number of broadcast, on-air and online critics and entertainment reporters primarily in the United States— — including, full disclosure, your real — and the Oscars are determined by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which is run by some 10,10 People all over the world who actually work on films. In other words, the overlap is zero.

Another school of thought, however, holds that critics’ choice of voters may still affect Academy members are currently voting – and will continue to vote on Tuesday – to determine their Oscar nominees, and they have shown a trend, especially as the group grows larger and more The younger (meaning more voters are busy with their careers and don’t have time to watch as many movies as older voters), rubber-stamp their previous awards body’s choice.

Here are my five takeaways from the Critics’ Choice Awards.

1) Brendan Fraser got the adrenaline he needed

for his transformative performance in The Whale

, Fraser got a lot of love at the Fall Film Festival – but his movie itself has poor reviews (it’s on 66 Rotten Tomatoes percent) and, perhaps not coincidentally, his buzz had subsided a lot by the end of the year. He was overlooked in the major critics awards and was featured in Gothams (to )Till Danielle Deadwyler) of and Golden Globes (To Austin Butler for Elvis

). After the Golden Globes, many of the people I spoke to felt that the mood and the momentum had shifted toward Butler.

But Frazier emerged victorious on Sunday and made the most of his moment in the spotlight. From the moment his name was called, he was visibly agitated (something voters noticed because They like to vote for people they think really appreciate their support), and leave a comment: He thanks Darren Arofnosky brought him back from the “wilderness” noting that “I spent…as subtly as possible reminding people that he has put in the time and that, unlike some of his competitors, he may never Another chance like this.

One thing to remember: the last seven 10 Best Actor Critics’ Choice winners went on to win corresponding Oscars – but three of those who didn’t Two, like Frazier, were the critics’ sentimental choices (Michael Keaton for Birdman and Chadwick Bo Sman for Ma Rainey’s black bottoms ) then in Lost at the Oscars to the non-emotional choice ( Eddie Redmayne for The Theory of Everything and Anthony Ho Pukins for father , respectively).

2) Everything Everywhere All at Once Apparently Critics’ Choice

About seven weeks or so after winning Best Feature Gotham Award than after collecting b’s 14 Best Movie of the Hour Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award (the latter with Tár),

Everything Everywhere All At Once proves yes Clear CCA favorite. (it appears with leading 000 noms, additionally Three is better than any other movie, so that’s no shocker.)

Although its heroine, Michelle Yeoh , Best Actress lost to Tár of Cate Blanchett , and the movie itself lost Best Ensemble and Best Comedy to Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery , which still won five Victory, three more than any other film. After winning Best Original Screenplay, Best Editing and Best Supporting Actor ( Quan Kehui ), it unexpectedly won Best Director (Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert , aka “Daniels”), at this point it is almost certain that it will It also won Best Picture.

Only five in the end 10 Best Picture Critics’ Choice Award winner has already received a corresponding Oscar (Boyhood,

La La Land

, Rome , Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and The Power of the Dog

and consistent with these numbers, I can see any of the Everything Everywhere in the Oscar for best picture.

Same as last year’s Academy Award Winner for Best Picture CODA (where , by the way, Critics’ Choice Award for Best Picture lost to The Power of the Dog ), There is an underdog aspect Everything Everywhere (an indie game that is unlikely to be a blockbuster) and the people involved (they have spent their entire careers both have faced adversity and still look cute) which makes it impossible to hold against them.

However, unlike CODA, Everything Everywhere is a challenging and polarizing film, which may cause it to have problems in the preferred (ranked choice) voting for Academy adoption best movie. This movie is worst on older people – they tend to get lost in the multiverse of it all – they still There is a disproportionate presence in the Academy. Everything Everywhere, what will it be used for? I can see The Fabelmans or Top Gun: Maverick Great in priority voting – but the only other ceremony that uses priority voting is the PGA Awards, which means we won’t see if/how priority voting affects their chances until February 10.

3) Quan and Bassett appear to be locked up

when Troy Kotsur, for his work in CODA, Taking to the stage Sunday night to present the Critics’ Choice Award for Best Supporting Actress, it was reminiscent of what a slam dunk looks like. In fact, from the start to the end of last awards season, Kotsur won just about every honor he was entitled to.

In my opinion, the woman he gave the Critics Choice Award to, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever of Angela Bassett, and best supporting actor film critic Choice Award, Ke Huy of Everything Everywhere Quan , also looks like a slam dunk. Like Kotsur, their performances are brilliant, and they have irresistible narratives, like his own: they’ve been around for a long time; Persevered, they are still here, not only surviving, but thriving.

It’s hard to resist, and it’s hard for me to imagine anything or anyone ruining the trajectory of both at the Oscars.

4) Critics’ Choice Golden Globe Winner Tank

Less than a week after dominating the Golden Globes — another ceremony where journalists determine the winners — Banshee of Inisherin 0 out of 9 (plus both of its male stars are MIA due to COVID) and The Fabelmans 1 point Actor/Actress Award Gabriel Labelle ) at the Critics’ Choice Awards superior.

Also disappointing Critics’ Choice Screening: Babylon 9 wins 1 (Best Production Design), Elvis 1 out of 7 (Best Hair/Makeup), “Avatar: Way of Water” We nt 1 for 6 (best visual effects) and Top Gun: Maverick won 1 for 6 (Best Cinematography).

5) Attention RRR

RRR, period music from India The action-thriller that has proven to be a huge phenomenon worldwide has garnered an impressive of two reviews Home Choice Awards: Best Foreign Language Film and Best Original Song for “Naatu Naatu,” which won a corresponding Golden Globe and helped the film win the Los Angeles Film Critics Circle Award for Best Music/Score.

Make no mistake: RRR in Serious Oscar race – not for best international picture (India really screwed the dog by submitting another film), but sure It’s for Best Original Song, and quite possibly for Best Picture (remember, there’s a guarantee slots and the Academy has never been a more international organization) and Best Director ( SS Rajamouli has won Best Director New York Film Critics Guild Award ).

RRR by Variance Films at U.S. distribution, the same company behind Drive My Car, the Japanese film last year with the film, The director and screenplay were nominated for Oscars, and nominated for Best International Feature Film. The same tenacious publicist Josh Haroutanian who handled that movie awards event is handling RRR‘s.

Saturdays at Ross House, one on Mount Olympus , I witnessed the enthusiasm of dozens of Academy members for this film. Like them, I braved the dreadful rain to get there, which I think is a testament to the heat of the film; unlike them, I wasn’t there to chat with Rajamouli and his cousin/composer/”Naatu Naatu” songwriter MM Keeravani

with screening or post screening reception, but with Rajamouli Record a podcast that will be released on Monday.

While my sound engineer was setting up, I realized the film was approaching the “Naatu Naatu” screening sequence, so I asked Rajamouli if he would mind delaying the start of our conversation by a few minutes so I could Audience reactions can be observed. He happily agreed, so we sneaked into the back of the theater, and sure enough, people were visibly dumbfounded throughout and burst into applause at the end.

Does this mean that RRR will not only be nominated for best original song , will also be nominated for Best Picture and Best Director, like the Critics’ Choice Awards? of course not. But, especially since this film cannot be nominated for an Oscar for Best International Feature Film, if either Or both I wouldn’t be surprised those nominations ended up happening.
