To quote the German writer Erich Maria Remarque, opening First trailer for on Netflix All Quiet on the Western Front , the first German adaptation of Remarque’s classic WWI novel.
The trailer, which you can exclusively view below, is a first look at the Edward Berger film, which will have its world premiere at September Toronto Film Festival 05.
From the beginning, it was clear that this was not your typical war movie. Images of fresh-faced soldiers excitedly marching to the front line intersect with footage of violence and horror in the trenches. True to its source material, All Quiet on the Western Front depicts war without heroism or grand adventure.

“I watch a lot of American and British movies, and like us, there are occasionally war movies , even anti-war films. I found them very interesting. But I don’t think they ever showed my point of view, my point of view as a German,” Berger told The Hollywood Reporter . “Not America, which saved Europe from fascism, nor Britain, which was attacked against its will and drawn into war, whose soldiers returned home, traumatized and psychologically wounded, of course, but they were honored For heroes, [there] war is an event to be proud of as a part of society, an event that enters the heart of the nation. For us, the opposite is true. There is nothing guilt, fear, fear in the heart of our nation and destruction.”
Lewis Milestone adapted Remark’s 1930 novel, which he adapted into an English-language film based on his experiences in the trenches, won the Academy Award for Best Picture and Best Director . An Emmy-winning 1930 TV adaptation, also in English, by Richard Thomas and Starring Ernest Borgnine. Berger’s Netflix film is the first time the book has been adapted into an original German version. Newcomer Felix Kammerer plays frontline soldier Paul Bäumer and Albrecht Schuch (System Crasher) plays his comrade Stanislaus Katczinsky. German star Daniel Brühl plays a German diplomat negotiating a German surrender in the final days of the war.
