Dark, Moody Glamour wins red carpet at this year's MTV VMAs

The MTV VMA red carpet has a history of creating memorable, awesome outfits. I mean, this is where Lady Gaga’s meat dress came from, cry out loud! The pacing and repetition of the annual music extravaganza isn’t synonymous with “subtle” or “downsizing” — however, this year, some of Hollywood’s top performers have changed things up, embracing a slightly more secretive MO. The best looks of the night are all In demure shades of navy and black – create an unexpectedly dark but still captivating atmosphere at an event. Still, despite the demure palette, these are by no means dull.

Lizzo kicked off the carpet when she showed up wearing a voluminous gown from the Jean Paul Gaultier Spring2022 Haute Couture collection by Glenn Martens. The romantic off-the-shoulder look is a wad of pleated fabric that turns heads. Blackpink’s Lisa, Jisoo, Jennie and Rosé continued the dynamism before appearing in black suits from Dior, Saint Laurent, Chanel and Celine (all of whom are the face of the brand). Their fabrics, whether lace or thick wool, are an unexpected shift from what many pop stars wear to the vampire, snug fit of the VMAs.

Even the men of the night embraced a quieter fashion sense. Host Jack Harlow wore a stylish leather suit from Hermès over a structured turtleneck. The ever-fashionable duo Maneskin will perform tonight, opting for a gorgeous black Gucci suit with a corset, cape and sequins. Compared to years past, when VMAs allowed you to see a range of bright looks, this new palette is a fresh shift that lets you focus on silhouette and detail. All black isn’t boring; instead, it can be downright romantic.
