While Philly won’t be extending Maxey, Sixers president of basketball operations Darryl Morey said Tuesday on “97.5 Frenzy” that he expects the star guard to remain with the team for the foreseeable future. “Because of the weirdness of the CBA, we’ll be able to add a major player next year before re-signing Maxey, and once we do that, he’ll be a cornerstone of the team,” Morey said, per Mike Vorkunov of The Athletic. Maxi will earn $4.3 million for the 2023-24 season and his club option has been exercised. He will become a restricted free agent next summer with an offer price of $6.3 million, according to Spotrac. The 76ers selected Maxi in the first round of the 2020 draft from the University of Kentucky, and he has become a key player in the team’s starting five. The 22-year-old will have a career-best season in 2022-23, averaging 20.3 points, 2.9 rebounds and 3.5 assists in 60 games while shooting 48.1 percent from the field and 43.4 percent from three. Given Morey’s comments, there should be little doubt about Maxey’s future in Philly next summer.
