In May, Dole Fresh Vegetables Inc. recalled 16 oz of Simply Nature Organic Spring Mix. and Walmart’s Marketside Spring Mix 11 oz. and 5 oz. Because it may contain hairy nightshade.
Hairy nightshade may refer to several different poisonous plants, all belonging to the nightshade family.
Nightshade may contain steroidal alkaloids, such as solanine, and have atropine-like effects on the nervous system that inhibit acetylcholinesterase, according to Colorado State University’s “Guide to Poisonous Plants.” Some nightshades also contain irritants, such as saponins, that can cause salivation and diarrhea. Nightshade may also accumulate toxic levels of nitrates.
The recalled products were removed from shelves in May and are distributed in Ohio, Illinois, Indiana and Tennessee.
