announced on Friday that
Yokai will be released : Art by Shigeru Mizuki Scheduled for October. The company is hosting a page book preview.
Publisher’s description of the full-color hardcover book:
Yokai: The Art of
Shigeru Mizuki
not only showcased his expertise in folklore, but also praised him as a naturalist scientist. Elements of Mizuki’s rich compositions—flora, fauna, and everything in between—display his mastery of form and love of nature. These popular depictions of the disappearing Japanese countryside are his contribution to preserving cultural heritage that would otherwise be forgotten. The eerie realism of his work is offset by his whimsy about horror. The works in this deluxe full-colour edition recall Maurice Sendak’s playful sensibility for popular music, while the technical prowess of traditionalists such as Dürer and Doré add to the He injects inspiration. Like any other Mizuki canon, each work is a unique snapshot of a human or other spirit in constant flux.
This book will feature additional writing from Mizuki scholars and translators
