ABC has officially ordered a comedy pilot based on the BAFTA-winning BBC series Motherland.
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt stars Ellie Ken Per will be in the top pilot named Drop-Off from Lionsgate Television – owning Motherland worldwide copyright – and ABC signature. Original creator Sharon Horgan, Holly Walsh and Helen Serafinowicz are executive producers, as is Kemper. Julieanne Smolinski (Home Economics on ABC) is writing and executive producing the pilot episode, while Michael Showalter (The Dropout) will be direct.
Drop-Off will follow Julia(Kemper), a working mom who doesn’t have any jobs, so she goes to find her village. With the help of new friends Calvin and Liz, Julia discovers that she can sometimes successfully balance work and parenting.
Motherland has aired for three seasons on BBC Two (it airs on AMC+ in the US) and won The BAFTA won Best Screenplay Comedy last year.
Kemper recently wrapped filming on Netflix’s rom-com Beginner’s Happiness . Former Office regular whose recent credits also include Disney+’s Home Sweet Home Alone, The Stand In and Dub Featured on The Simpsons and Central Park .
Writer Smolinski is back with Horgan after co-creating Starz’s Shining Vale with him. Smolinski’s credits also include Grace and Frankie and Black Monday.
Smolinski will executive produce Drop-Off with Showalter; Kemper; Merman Television’s Horgan, Clelia Mountford, Stacy Greenberg and Kira Carstensen; Lionsgate’s Paul Feig and Dan Magnante from Feigco Entertainment; and Walsh and Serafinowicz.
Kemper represented by WME, Mosaic and Hansen Jacobson. Showalter has partnered with UTA, Artists First and Goodman Genow.
