Emmys Analysis: Celebrating Your Own TV Awards Ceremony is in Serious Danger

THR’s executive editor for awards was involved in a botched telecast packed with repeat winners from the same handful of shows previously recognized by members of the Television Academy.

What to say about

Primetime Emmys

to all who watch it Did not expect awards ?

This show – on TV at least as it was scheduled right across from the Toronto International Film Festival, which I watched on TV this year – sucks, an ineffective host (sarcastically) on the beloved Saturday Night Live Veteran Kenan Thompson 1235219114, an intrusive announcer who is allowed more time for silly comments than winners in their acceptance speeches , Weird Host Inclusions and Omissions (Sydney Sweeney In the room, guys!), bad pacing, bad lighting, slow cuts and the list goes on. (For a more thorough dissection of telecasting, read THR Chief Television Critic Daniel Fienberg 1235219114 Upcoming review.)

Meanwhile, winners do not include Some of the most popular TV shows like Paramount Network’s Yellowstone and NBC’s This Is Us , because they weren’t even nominated, although they’ve definitely been featured in a montage of stories about how awesome TV is these days.

Also, there is only one show from this year’s host network NBC – SNL — Won an Emmy on primetime TV (there was only one at the time), which again made me wonder: Why do the four networks that take turns broadcasting the Emmys broadcast their own funerals? Eventually they will realize that promoting their competition is not smart business, and then what will happen?

Perhaps most disturbing of all, Monday night’s results reinforced my belief that most TV Academy members today, despite living in the age of Peak TV, are too lazy to watch, a big Heap, several hilarious shows, rebroadcast a joke Thompson made in his monologue at the top of the TV show, echoing

Something I often write about : “Tonight, we celebrate last year’s Hundreds and thousands of shows—and then we award five of them.” In fact, exactly five shows ended up winning multiple awards—HBO The White Lotus (5), Apple’s Ted Lasso (4), HBO The successor (three) ABC’s Abbott Elementary School (two) and Netflix’s Squid Contest

(2) – The other nine players each win one.

Here’s some food for thought: AMC Better Call Saul is one of the best rated shows on TV, however, as it nears the end

Emmy Awards qualifying (the last six episodes of the sixth period) and the final season will qualify in the next period), it still did not win in all categories. Showtime’s Yellow Jacket ), in its critically acclaimed rookie season, didn’t bring home a single figurine. And for other exciting young shows like Apple’s Severance

and Hulu’s only in the building Murder , limited to technical categories presented at one of the non-television creative arts awards ceremonies.

The problem isn’t that (most) shows and whoever wins don’t deserve it; it’s what everyone else deserves, but doesn’t seem to get a fair hearing. Members of the TV Academy seem to reflexively reward the same shows and people over and over, which is, frankly, boring. This year, for the seventh year in a row, the Emmy for Best Variety Talk Series was awarded to HBO Last Week Tonight (rather than one of the must-have shows every weeknight), and won Best Variety Sketch Series for the sixth year in a row Emmy Award Winner Saturday Night Live (now just facing another nominee by the TV Academy’s odd standards). This year also continues the winning streak: Serial Successor 1235219114, Comedy Series Ted Russo

, comedy actor Jason Sudeikis ( Ted Russo 1235219114), actor Zendaya ( Euphoric

), Comedian Kenan Thompson speaks onstage during the Gene Smart 1235219114 (Hack) and Comedy Supporting Actor Brett Goldstein ( Ted Russo ).

Due to the setbacks above, I Cheers to Netflix’s Victory Squid Game , Korean Global Phenomenon, in the main character category ( Lee Jung-jae

became the first to perform in a language other than English) and theatre director (

Hwang Dong-hyuk , Pilot); ABC Abbott Elementary Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy ( Shirley Lee Lal husband, who delivered the most memorable acceptance speech of the night) and comedy writing ( Quinta Brunson , pilot ); Lizzo for her Amazon Prime contest series Lizzo’s Little Big Girl (RuPaul of drag racing races lost after winning each of the past four years); and Jerrold Carmichael HBO Talk Show SpecialJerrod Carmichael: Rothaniel.

Hope the people in charge of this year’s Emmys — the voters and the people who make the TV show — will show more next year much care.
