If has left you yearning to relive 2004’s seminal predecessor, now you can do so in virtual reality. On Friday, a group of fans called Source VR Mod Team released Half-Life 2: VR Mod. You can download and play this mod for free as long as you own the original.
Although it is currently in open beta, this mod allows you to play Half-Life 2 single player story from start to finish. The Source VR modding team integrated some features from Half-Life: Alyx to modernize the experience and make it playable in VR. For example, you can switch between weapons using the same selection grid in Valve 2020 games.
Other VR-aware tweaks include adding optional laser sights, shoulder-mounted ammo storage, manual reloading, and two-handed weapon handling. Even room-scale movement is supported. The Source VR mod team said the project, but that hasn’t stopped people from enjoying the experience, with the mod currently receiving overwhelmingly positive reviews out of 732 reviews.
Like long before Half-Life 2: VR Mod. As , the project was first announced in 2017 and went through development hell before being re-merged in 2021. The fact that you can play it today is due to the recent influx of new team members to “reinvigorate” the development.
