Friday, March 31, 2023 (HealthDay News) — Due to a skin disease called feline atopic dermatitis, cats Constant licking and chewing may benefit from a new generic drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
FDA approved Modulis for cats on March 29, making it the first FDA-approved drug for the skin disease caused by this allergic dermatitis Generic cyclosporine oral solution.
Immunosuppressive drugs suppress the allergic process that causes itching in cats with this disorder.
The drug contains cyclosporine at the same concentration and dose as the approved brand-name drug, Atopica for Cats. The drug was approved in August 2011.
Cats with this condition may be very itchy. They may lick, chew and scratch their skin and hair.
This may cause them to develop other skin problems, including miliary dermatitis, lesions called eosinophilic plaques, and hair loss.
Cats need to be at least 6 months old and weigh 3 lbs to use this medication, which is only available from a veterinarian.
Persons administering this drug to cats should avoid accidental ingestion of the drug. FDA advises not to eat, drink, smoke, or use smokeless tobacco while handling it.
Wash your hands after administering Modulis for Cats to your pet. People with a known allergy to cyclosporine should avoid the product, the FDA warns.
