Forget ’90s Thong Sandals, Nicola Peltz Brings Back the Y2K Wedge in St Tropez

Earlier this week, a cohort of editors at Vogue House barely batted an eyelid at the sight of Victoria Beckham sporting an LBD and giant SpongeBob yellow Croc boot “Croots”. MSCHF’s Big Red Boots and JW Anderson’s amphibian Wellipet mules have made the once-maligned Vibram FiveFingers slip-on look positively elegant, as bulbous, behemoth shoes have become the norm in terms of column inch-accumulating celebrity street style.

That was, until yesterday, when Nicola Peltz was spotted in a Y2K throwback shoe rarely sighted this summer thanks to the proliferation of The Row’s ’90s minimalist Ginza sandals in It-girls’ suitcases. When heading to St Tropez’s Club 55 with husband Brooklyn Beckham and her parents, Peltz opted for a white broderie anglaise twin set, paired with a French Riviera-market inspired basket bag and–cue intake of breath–vertiginous gold cork wedges. Millennials, they resemble the pair you begged your mum for as a young teenager, from the likes of Nine West or Dune, only to be told you were too young to totter around in such a sky-high shape.

Seemingly, the shoes were a touch too tricky for Peltz to navigate; later on in the day, she was spotted being carried down a boardwalk to a waiting speedboat by Brooklyn, wearing fairly unstable orange sliders and Nike swoosh socks. Jennifer Lopez is also a fan of the WAG-friendly wedge (Cheryl Cole brought out several pairs in 2012 as part of her eponymous shoe line), and she prefers to balance her stacked white pair with a matching Birkin. Should Peltz desire a more comfortable option on her Côte d’Azur trip, the Princess of Wales can’t live without her favorite Castañer espadrilles, in a slightly more manageable mid-heel height.
