) Former Major League Baseball pitcher Anthony Varvaro died in a car accident Sunday morning at the age of 37, according to the Associated Press. Retired in 2016 as a police officer in the New York City area, he is reportedly heading to work at a Sept. 11 memorial service in Manhattan. He served as an officer with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. A native of Staten Island, Varvaro studied in St. Petersburg. John’s and made his MLB debut in 2010. He was on his way to serve at World Trade Center Command to commemorate the September 11, 2001 event when he rolled involved in a motor vehicle accident.

Stone. John’s baseball coach Mike Hampton, who served as assistant to the Red Storm during Varvaro’s three seasons there, said he was “overwhelmed” by Sunday’s tragic news.
“Not only is he everything you want from a player, he is everything you want from a person, ‘ said Hampton. “My heart goes out to his family, friends, teammates and colleagues.”
Port Authority officials A statement was released on Varvaro’s death.
“On this solemn occasion, the Port Authority honors the 84 employees killed in the World Trade Center attack – including 37 Port Authority police officers. Members of the Bureau – Our grief will only deepen with the passing of Officer Varvaro today,” the statement said.
Varvaro is 7-9 in his career with a 3.23 ERA and 150 strikeouts.
