Max Homa, who won the event last year at the Silverado Resort and Spa, shot a 65 on Sunday to beat Maverick McNealy by one stroke. The win kicked off his first FedEx Cup playoff appearance. Newcomers kicking off Thursday include 34-year-old rookie Erik Barnes, Paul Haley II, who has won Tour status for the first time in 10 years, the regular-season points leader Carl Yuan and overall points leader Justin Suh. Other big names in the 2022 Fortinet Championship field include 2021 Masters Champion Hideki Matsuyama, Rickie Fowler, Corey Conners and 2019 Fortinet Champion Cameron Champion.

Surprise, despite Connors being one of the favorites, McDonnell is out of his sight. The Canadian has not raced in Napa since finishing 13th in 2019. His ability to hit the ball seems to be perfect for the field, but it’s the closer he gets to the flag that he can’t compete consistently. The 30-year-old was second on the green circuit last season (71.9 percent). He was fifth in tee shots and 13th in drives to the green. But he only made the top 10 four times in 25 games (and missed the cut five times).
Homa, on the other hand, showed an all-around game every week of last season, and it all started here. At Fortinet in 2021, he ranks second in tee-to-greens and top-20 in regulars and putts on the greens. He finished the season with his 24th tee-to-green and 27th putt, and that balance propelled him into a career year. He has five top-10 finishes and 15 top-25 finishes in 24 games in 2021-22.
