In the show’s opening remarks, the host dove headlong into the controversy surrounding this year’s awards show. “I’ll tell you why I’m here,” he told the audience. “I’m here because I’m black. The show didn’t air last year because of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association — I wouldn’t say it’s a racist organization, but they didn’t have a single black member before George Floyd died. So, do what you want with this information. ’ He then recounted how he was “invited to be the black face of a troubled organization,” adding: “So when I had a moral race dilemma, I did what I did. I call my fellow woman Avery, and for the sake of this monologue, she represents every black person in America. I said, ‘What should I do? She’s like, ‘Well, how much are they paying you? I said, ‘$500,.’ She said, ‘Boy, if you don’t wear a good suit, take White people’s money…'”
He continued, “I was very proud of the decision until I got an email from a PR person saying that HFPA Chair Helen [ Hoehne] wanted to do a one-on-one sit-down with me. I said, ‘No thanks, I know when I hear a trap. And then they come back and say, ‘Well, they didn’t really mean to ask, they insisted you come to the meeting. I thought, ‘Or what? ! Are they going to fire me? ! They haven’t had a black host in 20 years, will they fire the first one? I can’t fire it and it’s back: “Helen really just wanted to tell you about the changes the organization is making in terms of diversity.” I’m going to be completely honest with everyone here tonight. I don’t really need to listen. I’m assuming they took the job with no changes at all. I hear they have six new black members, congrats to them, whatever. I’m here, really, because I look at this room and I see a lot of talented people. Regardless of HFPA’s past, this is a night to celebrate. I think the industry deserves a night like this. “
