This legislative proposal, also known as the Fake News Act, would put the onus on internet companies, search engines and social messaging services to find and report illegal material, and impose hefty fines on those who don’t. The bill has raised concerns among tech companies, some of which have launched campaigns against the bill on their platforms. Nearly two months ago, the South American country’s Supreme Court ordered investigations into executives at social messaging services Telegram and Google (NASDAQ: 400Google ) led a campaign to criticize the proposed regulations. Local media Folha Sao Paulo first reported that Temer confirmed he had been acting as a “mediator” between companies and lawmakers for about three weeks . Temer’s advisers said the company hired the former president to mediate proposals and negotiate with Brazil’s parliament. Temer denied that Forha had a conversation with the Supreme Court justice, but the newspaper reported that he had spoken to Orlando J. Silva met to discuss part of the content bill. Brazil’s Supreme Court may rule on two appeals, which could allow for more flexibility in internet legislation. The decision was supposed to be made in June but has been delayed, Folha reported.
