Google’s answer to Apple’s AirDrop, “Nearby Share,” is now officially out of beta for Windows. After some testing with more than 1.7 million people, the company decided to release a stable version, which you can download here.
Nearby Share is a very apt name – it basically describes the whole point of it exactly. You can use it to quickly (and easily) share content between Android phones, regardless of manufacturer. Starting today, you can use it to share files between Windows PCs and Android devices.
Since the beta launch, Google says it has transferred more than 23 million files between PCs and Android devices.
Stable releases provide an estimate of when the transfer is complete, and an image preview feature in device notifications. This is to ensure that you can confirm that the correct files are being shared.
Google says it is working with HP to pre-install the Nearby app on “select Windows PCs, such as the Dragonfly Pro.”
