You know what no one missed in Google’s recent smartphone lineup? gimmick. But not just any gimmicks — Google-style gimmicks, those that are here today, are gone next year. Remember Soli Radar? That’s right.
So, with that in mind, you’ll surely be happy to hear that the upcoming Pixel 8 Pro is now said to have an infrared thermometer on the back, below the circular LED flash and inside the camera hump.
As expected, the thermometer is capable of measuring your body temperature. The sensor is apparently similar to what most non-contact thermometers use (which should bring back fond memories of the pandemic!). To use the Pixel 8 Pro’s temperature sensor, you need to hold it as close to your forehead as possible without letting it touch your skin. Then you just hit the start button and move the phone to your temple within five seconds. The phone will vibrate after the temperature measurement is completed.
Considering the screen is on the other side of the phone – you know, how easy is it to use this case? We can’t tell you now because there’s a video that demonstrates how the feature works, it’s just that it got uploaded to YouTube and it turns out it wasn’t the greatest idea in history because the platform is owned by Google and the video has been closed for violating YouTube’s services terms were deleted.
This really doesn’t sound like an amazing user experience, but hey, when the next pandemic hits, you’ll be ready to scan everyone around you for anything other than the Pixel 8 Pro Additional hardware is required, so there’s that.

This earth-shattering new feature will only come to the Pro model, by the way, so don’t think about saving your cash and buying the vanilla Pixel 8.
The Pixel 8 Pro is expected to debut alongside the Pixel 8 in October, both rumored to be powered by Google’s own Tensor G3 SoC. According to reports, the Pixel 8 Pro will have a smaller screen than the Pixel 7 Pro, at 6. 05″, which is said to use Samsung’s largest ISOCELL GN2 sensor for its main camera.
