Hair in a sleek up-do and arms weighed down with gift bags: when I look at this photo of Hailey and Justin Bieber I see an elegant mother dragging her son into a pre-teen’s birthday party. He has been dressed in his Sunday best (a pair of Jimmy Choo loafers, a smart shirt and a backwards Realtree cap) while she’s wearing an oversized leather bomber with her favorite Saint Laurent bag slung over the shoulders.
That is, of course, not what was happening when the married couple were photographed leaving an Italian restaurant in Los Angeles last night. But for those who Keep Up With The Biebers, it has been speculated that Hailey’s been taking on more of a Kris Jenner-style role in Justin’s business affairs. Perhaps that’s why she’s decided to cloak herself in a series of managerial costumes over the last couple of weeks: like this Dominatrix-inspired LBD and this “I’m the boss” bomber jacket.
Hailey’s wardrobe tends to revolve around a Maeve Reilly-established formula – crop top, jorts, and Adidas Sambas – but when papped alongside Justin, the model often wears something a little oversized and boyish, as if to suggest she is borrowing from his own wardrobe. See: the Drew House hoodies and rolled-up boxers. She understands the requirements of being part of a celebrity couple is to coordinate outfits and take cute photos together. It’s a touch-free PDA, like Kaia Gerber and Austin Butler in their paint-splattered jeans and matching slogan caps.
